And while Apple won the top spot again, with a 49.1 percent share, it’s actually down 2.2 points from previous year, when it had 51.3 percent market share.
Of course, once Christmas Day comes along, the first task new users set out to accomplish is to fill up their new devices with apps. The new iPad Pro is grouped into “Full-Size Tablets” and represented less than 1% of device activations.
The company used data from the over 780,000 apps it tracks to make several interesting observations. Looking at the top manufacturers, Apple was number one with 49.1% of all new devices (down 2.2% from last year).
Samsung devices, for example, were responsible for 19.8 percent of all device activations, while Nokia devices made up 2 percent and Xiaomi devices made up 1.5 percent of all device activations.

Medium-sized smartphones, like the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S, were by far the most popular Apple product over this holiday period, making up 65 per cent of all new devices activated around Christmas. That more than doubled last year’s share of 13 percent, which was, in turn, over thrice the 4 percent share recorded in the 2013 holiday season. They were followed by the aforementioned phablets and full-size tablets, then by small tablets (9 percent), then small phones (1 percent). As for app downloads, Christmas day saw customers downloading 2.2x as many apps as the average day in December across multiple platforms including the Apple App Store and Android’s Google Play. These larger phones made up half of all the Android devices activated during the holiday week, and Samsung likely benefited from all their “plus”-sized offerings, including the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5″. It terms of apps, Christmas was once again the biggest day of the year for app downloads.
