Large storm brings twisters, floods, now snow and ice
GARLAND, Texas (AP) – Residents surveyed the destruction from deadly tornadoes in North Texas as the same storm system brought winter woes to the Midwest on Monday, amplifying flooding that’s blamed for more than a dozen deaths and prompting hundreds of flight cancellations.

At least 11 people died and dozens were injured in apparently strong tornadoes that swept through the Dallas area and caused substantial damage this weekend, while five people died in a flash flood in IL.
More than 40 people were killed by tornadoes and floods in the United States during the holiday season.
In the western and northern sections of the state, blizzard warnings were in effect until Monday afternoon and whiteout conditions were expected from heavy snow blown by winds gusting to 65 miles per hour, forecasters said.
The severe weather caused 2100 flights to be cancelled Monday and 3700 to be delayed, flight tracking service FlightAware said.
Bob Moore walks through his home in Rowlett, Texas on December 27, 2015, the morning after it was struck by a tornado. At least three people who died were found in vehicles, said Barineau, who also noted that some cars appeared to be thrown from the interstate, though it wasn’t known whether that was how the people found in the vehicles died. The National Weather Service has said “disastrous” flooding will happen in eastern Oklahoma. Those states included MI – where commuters prepared for snow, freezing rain and sleet, the Detroit Free Press reported – and Iowa, where flakes were falling Monday morning, according to the Des Moines Register.
The temperature in Dallas on Saturday, when the twisters struck, was an unseasonable 82 Farenheit (28 Celsius) – but weather forecasters said it will plunge to 32 F (00 C) by late Monday.
“This is a huge impact on our community and we’re all suffering”, Lt Pedro Barineau of Garland police said of the suburb about 20 miles north-east of Dallas, where eight people died, 15 were injured and about 600 structures, mostly single-family homes, were damaged.
The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Mississippi.
The National Weather Service said the damage left behind in Rowlett was from at least an EF-3 tornado with winds between 136 and 155 miles per hour.
Officials estimated some 800 homes have been damaged in the Dallas metropolitan area.
Three other storm-related fatalities occurred northeast of Dallas, the Collin County sheriff’s department told AFP.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared disaster areas in four counties on Sunday: Dallas, Collin, Rockwall, and Ellis.
Flash flooding closed roads across Alabama and trapped motorists in rapidly rising waters.
And one person drowned Sunday in Alabama floodwaters, local officials said.
Governor Mary Fallin of Oklahoma declared a state of emergency as there were blizzard conditions and an ice storm warning out west and flood warnings in the east, where one community had received 9in of rain. “I ask New Mexicans to please stay off the roads until the conditions improve”. Monday wasn’t off to a great start either, with more than 200 incoming and outgoing flights canceled by 9:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. ET). And Greene County authorities said two fatalities there were associated with the flooding.
The Mississippi River neared a potential record crest, after an unusual amount of late-autumn rain had the river already high before torrential downpours that began on Saturday.

Severe weather also hit parts of Australia, where more than 100 homes were lost in Christmas Day brushfires. Three adults and two children died over the weekend in Marion County after attempting to drive their auto over a flooded road and were swept into a creek.
