Tornadoes, storms kill at least 43 – US Midwest storm brings twisters, floods
Widespread rain has prompted flash flood watches in eastern Texas, eastern Oklahoma, most of Arkansas, central and southern Missouri and IL and central Indiana.

Dallas County Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Melinda Urbina said several emergency teams were dispatched to Sunnyvale, just east of Dallas, following reports of trailers on fire and possible injuries in a mobile home park.
The Texas Department of Transportation says many roadways across West Texas and the Panhandle have been closed due to ice and blizzard conditions, with traffic coming to standstill where Interstate 10 splits into Interstate 20.
Further north, rain caused risky driving conditions and flooding in Missouri, where Gov. Jay Nixon also declared a state of emergency, and IL. Three adults and two children died over the weekend in Marion County after attempting to drive their vehicle over a flooded road and were swept into a creek.
In Texas, at least 11 people were killed in the Dallas area over the weekend by tornadoes, including one packing winds of up to 200 miles per hour (322 km per hour).

“The storm system will gradually pull away by Tuesday, but flooding and treacherous travel could linger into midweek”.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said Monday the state is seeking a federal disaster declaration for some or all of the seven counties hit by a tornado last week. The mayor encouraged people to stay off the roads to keep them clear for emergency responders.
The rash of severe weather has spawned deadly tornadoes in Texas, intense flooding in the Midwest and blizzard conditions in New Mexico.
As many as 11 people were killed, in addition to several others who were injured, in tornadoes that struck the Dallas area Saturday. In northern Texas, where local officials estimated as many as 1,450 homes were damaged or destroyed. Numerous road closures were reported as the state struggled with heavy rains and flooding in some areas and ice and snow in others.
“This is a huge impact on our community and we’re all suffering”, Lt. Barineau said of Garland, a suburb about 30 kilometres northeast of Dallas.
Storms with the possibility of tornadoes were continuing to pound portions of the Southeast, including much of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, the National Weather Service said. The garage wall had collapsed and the roof fell in. The only part of the house that appeared to be spared was the master bathroom, where her brother-in-law took shelter Saturday night with his dogs.
City spokesman April Odom said a preliminary assessment found the storm damaged 72 structures in the Jefferson Avenue area, ranging from minor damage to full destruction.

In the nearby town of Rowlett, City Manager Brian Funderburk said Sunday morning that 23 people were injured, but that there were no deaths and no reports of missing people. Shortly before 7 p.m., the National Weather Service said there were indications of a “potentially strong” tornado near Garland and Rowlett. Nearly 1,350 departures and arrivals were canceled Sunday – 778 of them at Dallas-Fort Worth International alone.
