Cavaliers fall totally flat in blowout loss to Trail Blazers
Guard Kyrie Irving scored 22 points in 24 minutes and hit his team’s 17th 3-pointer just before the shot clock buzzer with 21 seconds left and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the fading Phoenix Suns 101-97 Monday night.

The Cavaliers made 16 threes on the night, every one of them a dagger three to extend their lead when the Suns threatened to close the gap.
Portland coach Terry Stotts came armed with a witty opening statement for his postgame press conference Saturday night following the Trail Blazers’ 105-76 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
With his double-digit scoring effort, Knight has now scored at least 18 points for a fourth straight game.
Brandon Knight’s 3-pointer cut Cleveland’s lead to 96-95 with 1:27 to go and, after James missed a jumper, Knight hit another three but it was waved off because of an offensive foul against the Suns’ Tyson Chandler. Portland didn’t make a turnover in the entire first half.
Walker scored 18 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter, and the Hornets defeated Los Angeles in Bryant’s final game in Charlotte against the team that drafted him – and promptly traded him – almost 20 years ago. After being stripped for a fastbreak layup to open the game, Booker suddenly began playing like a Reggie Miller type by making smart plays and shooting great. Defensively, the Cavaliers yield 94.9 points against the opposing teams.
Irving said prior to the game he felt like the second half against the Warriors was a breakthrough, then went out and proved it with a season-high 22 points. Portland’s 34-point third-quarter lead is its largest in any game this season. The Cavs were 5-of-20 from the field and committed seven turnovers, which the Blazers turned into 12 points. Intuitively, it seems that Blatt/James are probably right; integrating Iman Shumpert and Irving into the rotation is throwing off all the unit chemistry built over the first 25 games.
Portland started fast and didn’t let up throughout the first half as it led 63-34 at halftime.
For the first time in a long time, we finally get to see the Irving that we’ve come to know and love.
The Suns’ first stop will be in San Antonio, where they’ll play the Western Conference’s second-best team, the Spurs, on Wednesday, Dec. 30.
“Offensively, we are in a funk right now”, said James, who also had four rebounds and five assists. He’ll be back in action on Monday night in Phoenix.
Kawhi Leonard had 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Boban Marjanovic filled in ably for the injured Tim Duncan and also scored 17.
The Cavaliers kept going on runs (we see you J.R. Smith) but not long enough runs to totally pull away. Warren had 10 points off the bench in the quarter. We had rotations, Coach Blatt had rotations down, so we got to get back to that.
“I’ve been struggling a lot”, said Crabbe, whose previous career high was 19 points Tuesday night at Atlanta.

Pelicans 110, Rockets 108: NEW ORLEANS – Anthony Davis had 24 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, and Tyreke Evans stole Trevor Ariza’s inbounds pass in the final seconds to secure the win for New Orleans. The Cavaliers made 6 of 11 threes in the first quarter and finished the quarter with a 4-point lead. Earl Watson and Nate Bjorkgrenv moved up to replace Suns assistant coaches Jerry Sichting and Mike Longabardi, who were fired on Monday after the Suns lost at home to the 1-29 Sixers on Saturday.
