Mohammed Kurdi thanked Canadians for making his dreams come true. She lives in British Columbia and sponsored the family’s relocation to Canada.

Mohammed Kurdi, his wife and children will all stay with Tima Kurdi and her family for now.

The incident sparked world-wide outrage over the refugee crisis.

On behalf of her brother (and Alan’s father) Abdullah, who has chosen not to come to Canada, she thanked the Turkish government and the Kurdistan government in the autonomous region of Iraq, where he is now living.

Domestically, the images of Kurdi’s death up-ended an otherwise predictable Canadian election campaign, and knocked the incumbent Conservatives onto their heels after it was revealed that Mohammad and his family had applied for, and been denied, refugee status in Canada. She travelled to Belgium, Germany and Turkey, helping give a voice to those displaced by the war in Syria.

“I tried to swim to the shore with the help of the lights but couldn’t find my wife and children once I was there”.

Abdullah Kurdi has chosen to remain in the Middle East.

“Even though the tragedy was very painful for us, it’s opened the doors for others – that’s what counts”, she said of Alan Kurdi’s death.

He died with his mother and five-year-old brother who, like so many Syrian refugees before and since, were driven by desperation to attempt the risky boat crossing to Greece.

Canadian officials said the application didn’t have the necessary documentation. But along with relief, gratitude and elation there was also deep sorrow for their brother, Abudllah Kurdi, whose wife and two sons drowned as they attempted to travel from Turkey to the Greek Island of Kos in September.

Tima Kurdi wiped away tears as she greeted her relatives at the airport’s arrival gates.
