They were in position for more points on their third possession, but Mike Nugent’s 45-yard field goal attempt went wide right. And then Andy Dalton fractured his thumb on a freak play and would miss the rest of the regular season. At left is Denver Broncos inside linebacker Danny Trevathan.
Denver’s top-ranked D looked overmatched and outcoached in the first half, as Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson made moving the ball on the Broncos look easy, even with a backup quarterback. The ball fell to the ground and was called an incomplete pass. After a review it was upheld despite appearing to be a fumble. But it didn’t matter as McCarron promptly mishandled a shotgun-formation snap and the Broncos recovered the fumble to end the game. By marching right down the defense’s throat yet again.
The win was ugly and nearly entirely in doubt Monday night.
Osweiler connected with Sanders on a short TD throw for Denver’s first third-quarter points since November 8 at Indianapolis, and C.J. Anderson gave the Broncos their first lead when he broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run with 11:17 remaining. As mentioned in the above paragraph, the Broncos had to have so many instances go their way in this game to achieve that playoff berth. The defense simply was not ready to let another win slip away.
In reference to the play Monday that unceremoniously ended the game for the Bengals and caused them to slip from the AFC’s 2-seed to the 3-seed, McCarron pinned the blame on himself. The Broncos won 20-17 in overtime.
Click on the video above to see McManus make a mess of his field goal. Though, if the Broncos lose next week to the Chargers, that changes things up as well. It’s time to play the best second half we’ve played all year, ‘ and we did that tonight.
The victory showed the Broncos could score in the second half and that quarterback Brock Osweiler could win a crucial contest with late-game dramatics.
They came out with a quick touchdown out of halftime in just 4:40 with eight pass completions and just one run up the middle by Anderson. Not too long after they took over on downs, the Broncos received a huge play when tight end OWEN DANIELS (5 catches for 70 yards) took an Osweiler pass down the seam for 26 yards to the DEN 38 yard line.
“My fault. Simple as that”, McCarron said after the game, explaining that he was caught looking at the defense’s adjustment to A.J. “Both sides are pushing”.
McCarron was sharp early in the game Monday as the Bengals crafted their two-touchdown lead.
Then, suddenly, the Broncos broke out. He found Green for a 5-yard TD pass in the first quarter. But he nearly had a big one, a 34-yard bomb for a touchdown.

Ronnie Hillman also had 9 carries for 25 yards. Danny Trevathan lead the team with 12 tackles and Derek Wolfe and Vance Walker each tallied a sack apiece. Denver’s Brock Osweiler was 27 of 39 for 299 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. The OT wins are the most by any National Football League club. Doing so at Mile High Stadium might be the spark this team needs. Not one aspect won this game for Denver. Overtime would be needed to determine a victor.
