Brits warned of Christmas Day terror massacre threat

Beijing police announced on Thursday that they had issued a yellow security alert to ensure safety during the Christmas period.

Security was tighter than usual on Thursday, with armed police posted outside Sanlitun’s shops barricades blocking the entrance to roads in embassy districts.

The government blamed that incident on Islamist militants from China’s unruly far western region of Xinjiang, where hundreds have died in unrest in recent years.

Chinese authorities remain anxious about crowd control after last year’s deadly New Year’s stampede in Shanghai killed 36 people.

Though China has been battling terrorists in Xinjiang and several parts of the country, it is rare to receive open threats. And analysts have said global anxiety about terror threats is likely to make the Chinese leadership feel more justified in taking a tough line on the issue.
