Heavy rains from a storm system that devastated towns in Texas over the weekend with tornadoes caused rivers to rise to unusual levels in parts of Missouri and IL more accustomed to flooding in the spring when snows typically melt.
Other rivers in Arkansas under a flood warning include the Little Red River at Judsonia, parts of the Oachita River in four counties, the Little Missouri River in three counties and the White River in three counties.
Flooding was expected to continue over the next week, working its way toward Arkansas and Mississippi. “The river is forecast to crest sometime Thursday at its highest level since the historic flood of 1993”.
Up and down the Mississippi River, one of several rivers rising rapidly across the region, crews worked quickly to prepare sandbags and check levees to ensure they were ready to lessen the effects of the flooding, however possible. Jim Kamper, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said there is a lot of rain that needs to leave the state. The plant stopped operating Monday night.
The flooding has taken a tragic turn, killing several people.
Noting that a dozen of those deaths had been caused by vehicles being swept from flooded roads, Nixon reiterated that motorists should never drive around barricades or into standing water. Recovery efforts also are underway in Polk and Jasper counties.
In Morrilton, where a record crest of 41.3 feet was measured in May 1990, forecasts predict river levels could rise to 41.0 feet by Friday. Their names and where they are from hasn’t been released.

Drivers should avoid crossing washed-out roads, and residents near rivers should keep up-to-date with the latest flood predictions, Clarke said. The victim was identified as James Evan LaRue, from Dover. Major flooding was occurring along the Kankakee, Illinois, Sangamon and Vermilion rivers. “This is a unsafe event, this is a potentially life-threatening event and we want to make sure that people that takes this as seriously as it really is”, Scott Pettus, Cherokee County emergency manager, told KTUL.com. Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency because of widespread flooding around the state, which has closed many roads.
