Protesters march on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue
Protesters try to block the entrance to the Apple Store on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, calling for the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, in Chicago.

Demonstrators are planning to march through downtown Chicago’s high-end shopping district again to draw attention to the 2014 police killing of a black teenager who was shot 16 times by a white officer.
“Our marches have learned from Baltimore and Ferguson and that’s why they’ve been so wonderfully peaceful and organized and at the same time, impactful and effective”, Livingston noted.
The crowd, surrounded by police on bicycles, stepped off the Michigan Avenue bridge shortly after noon and laid down in the street chanting, “Laquan McDonald on the ground, this is why we lay down”. He was reelected to a second term as mayor on February 20.
For Connie Mayfield, the protests were a reminder of similar unrest in her hometown of Minneapolis, where protesters Wednesday started a demonstration at the Mall of America before moving to the Minneapolis-St.
Police officers and other law enforcement sources who talked to the Tribune on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly said the microphones routinely don’t operate because of negligence by the department.
One activist, Pete White, said the demonstration was motivated in part by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s recent decision not to charge a California Highway Patrol officer who repeatedly punched a woman, Marlene Pinnock, along the Harbor Freeway.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan had asked the DOJ for an outside, independent investigation into the pattern and practices of the Chicago police.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year and a winter of discontent, a season of police bullhorns and Christmas lights. “They wake up and say, ‘OK, they’re hitting us in our pockets.’ And because we believe the Emanuel administration really values profit over people”, the Rev. Gregory Livingston, Coalition for a New Chicago, said. Police have said McDonald had a knife. “They have a right to protest”.
“We will be a better city for it”, Emanuel said.
The male dispatcher asks if the caller has detained the person, but the caller only says: “Yea, he’s here”.

At the Minneapolis airport, officials shut down two security checkpoints to fliers for 45 minutes after protesters came inside one terminal, resulting in a few delayed flights, airport spokesman Patrick Hogan said.
