At the time of the discovery, engineers with SoCalGas weren’t quite sure where the leak was originating but suspected a well casing had failed deep below the surface of the more than 8,000 foot deep well.

The leak has also struck a blow in the California’s plans to reduce emissions. By that point, enough methane will have been released into the atmosphere to make an impact on the United States’ total yearly emissions – to say nothing of the costs and upheaval residents of Aliso Canyon have endured, or the financial cost of repairing the broken line.
