Gas company pinpoints well spewing nasty odor over LA

Meanwhile, the number of families seeking help in fleeing a massive and persistent methane leak at a Southern California Gas Co. storage field above Porter Ranch has swelled to more than 6,000, the company said. They are drilling a relief well nearby that they will eventually connect to the leaking well so they can plug it with cement.

Environmentalists have seized on the leak as evidence of an aging fossil fuel energy infrastructure that has led to thousands of smaller gas leaks throughout the system that have gone largely unaddressed.

Cuba: Obama welcome to visit but not to meddle
US President Barack Obama himself called on Thursday for Congress to lift the embargo, calling it the “legacy of a failed policy”. USA regulations still prohibit travel to Cuba for tourism.

“Once the leak is stopped we will be able to evaluate what caused the leak and we will be able to evaluate how much natural gas escaped”, said So-Cal gas spokesman Mike Mizrahi.

The breakthrough came in the early morning hours at a depth of 3,800 feet by technicians using a process called active magnetic ranging, and they are now preparing to continue the drilling process, spokeswoman Anne Silva said in an email.

The description for the video says the methane plumes were made visible by a “specialized infrared camera operated by an Earthworks ITC-certified thermographer”. The well in question had not been inspected by the state since 1976, three years before SoCal Gas removed a malfunctioning subsurface safety valve that could have prevented the methane from leaking into the atmosphere. “It is coming out with force, in incredible volumes. And it is absolutely uncontained”, O’Connor said.

The Los Angeles Unified School District already agreed to relocate almost 1,900 students from schools near the leak, citing disruption from absenteeism and several visits to the health office. The move begins after winter break and could last until June.

Southern California Gas Company had been trying to plug a massive natural gas leak for more than two months, and now we have some new perspective on the scale of the leak. At the time of the discovery, engineers with SoCalGas weren’t quite sure where the leak was originating but suspected a well casing had failed deep below the surface of the more than 8,000 foot deep well.

The leak has also struck a blow in the California’s plans to reduce emissions. By that point, enough methane will have been released into the atmosphere to make an impact on the United States’ total yearly emissions – to say nothing of the costs and upheaval residents of Aliso Canyon have endured, or the financial cost of repairing the broken line.
