The Buffalo National River is closed to the public following extreme flooding, according to a river press release on Monday (Dec. 28).

EMA Director Toya Stiles said the river is already at moderate flood stage and isn’t expected to crest until Tuesday afternoon, when it will reach 50.5 feet.
Roads near rivers that were closed due to flooding in the spring likely are unsafe to drive now, Townsend added. Flood level for the river is 45 feet. Minor flooding is forecast, according to the weather service.
The National Weather Service believes the river will fluctuate between about 10 and 15 feet through Friday. Thursday should be sunny with a high near 44.
Murray Lock and Dam at Little Rock is expected to see 400,000 to 450,000 cubic feet per second, more than four times normal flow, on Wednesday, according to the Arkansas Waterways Commission with information from the Corps of Engineers. The flood stage at Van Buren is reached once the river hits 22 feet. “There was no place for it to go because the ground was saturated”. The same warning was extended for the Wateree River at Lake Wateree. “The White River even ran backward at one point as torrents rushed into it from the MS”.

In Cape Girardeau, the Mississippi River’s level was just over 40 feet Monday evening, and it will crest Saturday at or near the record flood level of 48.5 feet, which was set in 1993. Late December 1990, also saw a strong arctic cold front that caused temperatures to fall some 50 degrees in a day, with 1 to 2 inches of ice and sleet falling across northeast Oklahoma.
