Eagles fire coach Chip Kelly with 1 game left in 3rd season
The NFL’s coaching carousel didn’t wait for Sunday’s end of the regular season to begin spinning as the Philadelphia Eagles announced Tuesday that they’d dismissed Chip Kelly.

Many speculated this could be a make-or-break year for Kelly after he was given more control over roster decisions to implement his own brand of play. As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change. “To the extent that we are able, we will try to keep you informed as we go through this process”.
Lurie will discuss the decision at a 12 p.m. press conference on Wednesday.
The Eagles said coach Pat Shurmur would be the interim head coach for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, the Eagles’ last game of the season, while senior advisor Tom Donahue, the former GM of the Buffalo Bills, would assume the role of senior director of player personnel.
Where could Kelly go?
Here are three things to know about Kelly’s firing.
Kelly coached the Eagles to a 26-21 record in three seasons with the team.
Kelly still had two years left on his 5-year, $32.5 million contract, with an annual salary of $6.5 million, according to Spotrac.
Angered by the trade and the way the news was broken to him, McCoy suggested a disconnect existed between Kelly and many of his players, especially the black ones.
First, he proved the decades-old adage that going from the NCAA to the National Football League is a treacherous move, nearly guaranteed to be a cold slap of reality to a coaching stud who quickly realizes that no longer entering every game with the built-in advantage of having more talented players than the opponents is an automatic disadvantage. The Eagles had 10 wins and won the NFC East title in his first year, but lost in the opening round of the playoffs at home to the New Orleans Saints. What it should be remembered for is a lesson on why coaches should be careful when they ask for complete control. Kelly also traded for a quarterback that didn’t really fit his system. Kelly was adamant in saying that he wanted to remain with the Eagles.
So it was Kelly who was shown the door. The team you’ll hear the most about over the next several days will be the Tennessee Titans.
Kelly got off to a fast start. Kelly’s plays didn’t change a lot from year to year, much less week to week. Don’t look for Kelly to go back to the college ranks.
A potential move that would possible break the internet is Chip Kelly to Cleveland.

Kelly wasn’t the only one ousted in the shakeup.
