Supreme Court slaps temporary ban on luxury diesel vehicle sales in Delhi
The court also ordered Air Pollution Control Commission to take stock of pollution levels in the city immediately and monitor it subsequently to verify the impact of the court’s orders. An overwhelming 74% (8727 votes)said they won’t consider buying a plus 2000cc diesel vehicle even if registrations do begin once again next year.

Empty/unladen commercial vehicles bound for Delhi, can enter Delhi on payment of the Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) of Rs.700/1300 per vehicle depending upon the category.
Commercial vehicles registered before 2005 can not enter Delhi.

In a major setback to premium and luxury carmakers, the Supreme Court on Tuesday suggested to ban registration of diesel cars and SUVs with capacity over 2000cc.
“Today, the Supreme Court has given some orders which we will study”.
The court had also asked the state and central governments to come up with a solution to clean Delhi’s air.
The courts are pushing the authorities to act over New Delhi’s toxic air, ranked as the worst in the world in a World Health Organisation survey a year ago of over 1,600 cities.
Close on the heels of the AAP government announcing restrictions on cars in Delhi based on registration numbers, the Supreme Court on Wednesday has stepped in to curb high pollution levels in the national capital. The ban, which comes into immediate effect, will last until March 31, 2016.
Analysts say Maruti Suzuki – India’s biggest carmaker – could be a beneficiary of the partial ban on diesel cars in Delhi as most of its fleet comprises of smaller sized engines and petrol cars.
The court had convened yesterday to hear carmakers’ plea against the ban on diesel cars in Delhi and other matters related to the growing air pollution in the nation’s capital.
It has said this way – “Why should a rich man travel in a diesel auto and pollute the environment”. Many of its other models have large diesel engines as well.

“In India, there is a tendency of banning things rather than dealing with problems on hand, like the cars on the road”, Khattar said.
