Sun Bowl–Washington State vs
Victories on the recruiting trail and with the hiring of assistant coaches carries infinitely more weight than a win in the Who-Gives-A-Damn-Bowl; on the heels of yet another season where expectations fell grossly short.

Miami answered right back with a 15-play, 69-yard drive as snow started to fall to tie the game.
Washington State led 20-7 at the half and looked in total control, limiting Miami to three total first downs over the second and third quarters. That was painful enough, but then Miami was intercepted near the goal line on an ill-advised halfback pass on its final possession of the game. And two plays later, running back Mark Walton fumbled the ball inside the 5-yard line.
Falk passed 29-for-53 for 295 yards and two touchdowns while Morrow rushed 10 times for 71 yards.
First the Hurricanes had a potential tying touchdown – a 5-yard pass from Brad Kaaya to wide receiver Stacy Coley – negated by a block-in-the-back penalty on receiver Herb Waters. Scott’s first game as coach featured one of the wildest finishes ever seen in college football when the Hurricanes stunned No. 22 Duke with a controversial last-second, eight-lateral kick return for a touchdown that was upheld after a nine-minute review.
Despite the team’s comeback and its resilience after seeing former head coach Al Golden fired after a blowout loss to Clemson, Scott wasn’t in the mood to talk moral victories. The streak includes a loss to Notre Dame in the 2010 Sun Bowl.
Nevertheless, with the game on the line, offensive coordinator James Coley chose to dig deep into his bag of tricks and call quite possibly the dumbest play of the entire game.
“There are a lot of decisions that have been made and there’s a couple more to be made, ” Richt said.
Might as well throw it with the running back.
The Cougars had no problem picking off the pass and that would seal the bowl game for them and Miami’s fate. IN (6-7) snapped a seven-year postseason drought with Saturday’s appearance, but the Hooisers are in still in search of their first bowl win since 1991.
Against the 104th-ranked rush defense, the Hurricanes averaged 4.2 yards per carry (30 for 125 yards).
Washington State’s defense got some help from a penalty and forced two late turnovers. Still, game tape will be collected on the NFL-caliber talent that does make it on the field for Miami as they take on Washington State in the Sun Bowl at 2:00 PM EST on December 26th. But not the Hurricanes, who on Saturday will end a tumultuous season when they face Washington State in the nationally televised Sun Bowl. He’s got more credibility than I have at least, particularly when it comes to Washington State when I occasionally let my subjectivity get in the way of clear thinking.
The Washington State Cougars finished the season strong with wins in three of four with the loss coming to Washington in the Apple Cup. Not to mention, Luke Falk is the best player on the field.

This team and this season were special, and as the last few seconds of the Sun Bowl ticked off, I didn’t want it to end. The five-play, 65-yard drive included a 20-yard pass to Mickens that was upheld after a challenge from Southern Miss.
