Washington State arrived at the Sun Bowl with the No. 1 passing offense in the nation, but it was the Cougars’ 93rd-ranked defense that saved the day against Miami.
“I think guys understand when somebody goes down, it could have been anything, it could have been an injury, a guy could have gotten sick at the last minute, a guy has to step into those roles”, Scott said on the nature of Carter being sent home.
The skid will end for one of these teams Saturday.
Washington State does have two receivers that have a chance to be employed with National Football League teams in 2016, and therefore Bush could get a chance to make some plays in against the pass that relieve National Football League scouts and decision makers of the fear that he gets lost in coverage, and a player with Coley’s speed could always use extra chances to show the burners on tape.
The Cougars took the win, despite being held scoreless by the ‘Canes defense in the increasingly snowy second half.
Washington State led 20-7 at the half and looked in total control, limiting Miami to three total first downs over the second and third quarters. The first quarter ended 7-7, but the Cougars ran off 13 straight points in the second.
The Hurricanes rallied in a blizzard in the fourth.
Great field possession on back-to-back drives and Miami walked away empty-handed. He threw touchdown passes of 31 yards to running back Jamal Morrow and 25 yards to receiver Gabe Marks.
Miami threatened twice inside WSU territory in the final four minutes.
Gaskin’s other scores came on 2- and 1-yard runs in the first quarter and a 13-yarder in the fourth. The WSU offense could not get a first down, and the Hurricanes returned the Cougars punt to the WSU 29-yard-line with plenty of time to score.
For Indiana, Sudfeld hit 28-of-51 throws for 389 yards with three touchdowns and two picks, and Devine Redding accumulated 35 carries for 227 yards and one touchdown.
Miami was out of their element in the El Paso-based Sun Bowl against Washington State-in more ways than one. The Cougars took a 10-7 lead on a 30-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore Erik Powell on the ensuing drive. He rushed for 939 yards and six touchdowns. In the driving snow of West Texas; asking a glove-wearing running back to deliver, instead of putting the ball in the hands of a clutch quarterback-it was an absolute disaster.
Marshall was 11 for 17 on third-down conversions, and outgained UConn 389-213. The Canes also turned it over three times the Cougars’ one miscue. However, the Cougars forced two turnovers, with cornerback Marcellus Pippins recovering a fumble at the 5-yard line and safety Shalom Luani intercepting a pass on a Miami trick play at the 9-yard line to seal the win.
And for Miami, that brutal stretch just kept getting tougher. Connecticut, which went 2-10 in its first season under Bob Diaco, won three of its final four games to rebound from a slow start to reach the St. Petersburg Bowl. Since then, an inexplicable 0-6 in the post-season. Miami is 0-5 in bowl games since then, including a 33-17 loss to Notre Dame in the 2010 Sun Bowl. Hes as talented as anybody in our conference. The Sun Bowl has been played in a snowstorm a few times through its long history. Mistakes. Incompetence. Bad calls.
Longtime Georgia coach Mark Richt, a former Miami quarterback, was hired in late November and is tasked with restoring the program to its former glory after a decade of mediocrity.

It’s becoming somewhat of a pattern for the Miami Hurricanes.
