In a step towards augmenting the anti-aircraft capabilities of the country’s naval assets at sea, the Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LR-SAM) project which can intercept incoming targets at a range of 80 km has successfully completed its maiden test flight from a Naval warship.
The LRSAM system has been collectively developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd.(IAI), Israel.
The LRSAM was tested at extended ranges, defence ministry spokesperson Nitin Wakankar said.
The missiles are fitted onboard the Kolkata Class destroyers and would also be fitted on all future major warships of the Indian Navy. The tests included a check on the tracking and guidance through the MF-STAR – a multifunction active electronically scanned array naval radar.
President Pranab Mukherjee visited Israel and Palestine last month.
Yossi Weiss, CEO of IAI, said the interceptors were fired from the heart of the Indian Ocean from an Indian Navy ship, striking their targets successfully.
In November 2009, Israel signed a deal worth $1.1 billion to supply an upgraded tactical Barak 8 air defence system to India.

The new missile system cost India $1.4 billion and went into development in 2006.
