Hyundai Sun Bowl Player Spotlight: RB Joe Yearby
On Saturday the Miami Hurricanes and Washington State Cougars will face off against one another in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. A win in the Sun Bowl feels like it would be much more important to the Cougars, who haven’t won a bowl game since 2003.

But the second half, when snow started to fall, didn’t see WSU at its best. He completed 29 of 53 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Falk was throwing short, quicker passes and the running game came more into play.
Tweet of the game: Snowstorm or not, Washington State fans were going to take their shirts off at the Sun Bowl no matter what – and of course there was some Fireball involved. The weather is expect to continue throughout the game. The Cougars had just 158 second-half yards, but their defense held tough when they needed to the most, forcing a pair of late turnovers when Miami had the ball deep in Washington State territory to preserve the victory.
The Cougars had no problem picking off the pass and that would seal the bowl game for them and Miami’s fate.
Longtime Georgia coach Mark Richt, a former Miami quarterback, was hired in late November and is tasked with restoring the program to its former glory after a decade of mediocrity.
At this point, all we can do is ponder about the new Miami football coaching staff, new recruits and whether or not players like Coley and Corn Elder will finish out their remaining year of eligibility at Miami. Miami is 19-19 all-time in bowl games, and Washington State is 6-5….
The Hurricanes persevered, only to be undone by penalties and a slippery football that resulted in a wobbly halfback pass that WSU intercepted with less than 2 minutes to play.
The Miami Hurricanes don’t have numbers that jump off the page with middle of the row numbers on both sides of the ball but game through enough to win eight games.
Miami: QB Brad Kaaya is fifth on the school’s all-time passing list with 6,217 yards, ahead of Bernie Kosar and Vinny Testaverde.
The Canes’ ensuing possession came to a crashing halt when Kaaya was sacked on 3rd-and-7-after an incompletion to Scott and a three-yard gain to Waters on first down. Nobody scored in the third quarter, and it wasn’t until Braxton Berrios reeled off a 60 yard run early in the fourth quarter that Miami seemed to awake from its hibernation. Washington State Cougars recorded 397.0 passing yards and 79.9 rushing yards while allowed 223.3 passing yards and 199.5 russhing yards with turnover differential of 0.3. Washington State fumbled in the second quarter, but the defense forced a three-and-out. Interim Miami coach Larry Scott said Carter violated a team policy, without divulging specifics. On an exceedingly questionable call, sophomore running back Joseph Yearby dropped back to pass and threw an interception. He’s got more credibility than I have at least, particularly when it comes to Washington State when I occasionally let my subjectivity get in the way of clear thinking.
The Hurricanes surprised the Cougars by going to the Wildcat formation and having Yearby take a direct snap.

We can tick off the impressive accomplishments from the season: Finally beating OR (on the road, no less); taking a very good Stanford team to the wire; beating a ranked UCLA team on the road; taking care of teams they should have; stepping up and proving it at just about every opportunity, and numerous comebacks.
