Israeli man dies of wounds suffered in West Bank stabbing
The Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday distanced itself from reported plans to build thousands of new homes in a politically incendiary area of the West Bank, calling the initiative the brainchild of former housing and construction minister Uri Ariel, a member of the right-wing, pro-settlement Jewish Home party.

The ministry’s plans include moves to retroactively legalize a number of illegal outposts in occupied areas, as well as to create urban continuity between illegal settlements to Jerusalem, the watchdog said.
“These plans therefore have no standing and are not binding on anyone”.
In 2013, faced with global pressure, Netanyahu vetoed construction of some 1,200 homes there but Peace Now said the housing ministry had hired architects to prepare fresh blueprints.
The ministry said that it “acts only according to approved plans and based on the decisions of the government and prime minister”.
Israelis march from the Jewish settlement of Maale Adumim to the controversial West Bank area known …
“Using primarily these five methods: seizure for military purposes; declaration of state lands; seizure of absentee property; confiscation for public needs; and initial registration, Israel has managed to take over about 50% of the lands in the West Bank, barring the local Palestinian public from using them”.
Situated between Jerusalem and the settlement of Maaleh Adumim, critics say that the construction in the area would effectively separate the northern and southern parts of the West Bank, and make it more hard for a future Palestinian state to be territorially contiguous.
Ariel, himself a resident of Kfar Adumin settlement, northeast of E1, is now agriculture minister.

Construction plans for over 12 thousand housing units in occupied East Jerusalem and the Old City are also underway by the Ministry of Housing, the report said, adding that around half of 55,548 settlement units expected to be built through the ministry’s plans lie on the Palestinian side of the separation wall. Tuesday’s statement from the PMO related only to the E1 plans, not to wider settlement planning.
