Steven Finn strikes as England close in on victory
Steven Finn took three wickets in the evening session as England pressed for victory in the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead.

Facing a daunting 416 to win, South Africa made a positive start as Stiaan Van Zyl and Elgar kept the early run-rate at five-an-over, the pair running well between the wickets and punishing any loose balls.
Van Zyl scored 33 in 36 balls with six fours.
“There’s a 1% chance of South Africa winning and 2% of saving it. I would be amazingly surprised if England don’t win”. And, after what happened in India few weeks back, South Africa must have been anxious.
Finn had already removed first-innings centurion Dean Elgar and home captain Hashim Amla when he was called on to turn in a final spell before stumps in Durban.
What makes it worse is that Bairstow, in the team ahead of Jos Buttler, was actually the star of the show in the first part of the day. He was caught in the deep by JP Duminy off part-time bowler Van Zyl, who claimed three late wickets.
Root passed 50 for the 13th time in 26 innings in 2015, but missed the chance to convert that to a fourth century this year when he sent a top edge to slip off Kyle Abbott. However, after six meaty boundaries he failed to cover the line of a Stokes delivery from round the wicket which squeezed between bat and pad.
Finn then struck twice in quick succession after the break.
The prize wicket of Amla was first to fall as he inexplicably flashed at a wide delivery outside off stump, before Elgar played a questionable shot to a fuller delivery that Root gleefully hung onto at first slip.
Flying Steven Finn charged in with everything he had to produce a final over beauty to take England within touching distance of a memorable Durban victory.
England hasn’t won the first Test of a series overseas (other than Bangladesh 2009-10) since their tour of South Africa 11 years ago.
“Scoring runs for a batsman is a nice knack and taking wickets is the same for a bowler”.
De Villiers had a lucky escape on 33 when Moeen turned one through the gate, but Bairstow was unable to complete the stumping. He has been the only batter with any fluency in the match.
“England have bowled well on a pitch that has become a bit benign, but when batsmen are looking to bat they are hard to prise out and you’ve just to got take every half chance”.
Finn has never really struggled for dismissals during his Test career, with 107 in 27 matches to date, but that has not always been enough.
His is the second highest aggregate for England ever behind Michael Vaughan’s 1,481 in 2002 and the second highest this year behind Australia’s Steve Smith, who finished with 1,474.
He added of his recovery: “To rest a stress fracture in your foot you don’t have to do too much, I was parked up on the sofa for a long time”. I felt good and felt I was threatening. The rewards we got from both a batting and bowling perspective were born through patience and hard work.
