The wit and wisdom of ‘Downton Abbey’ characters, actors
Don’t blame Maggie Smith for the end of “Downton Abbey”.

The 81-year-old actress, who starred as Dowager Countess Lady Violet Crawley from series one, admits she hasn’t tuned into a single episode of the hugely popular show. “It was very emotional; we didn’t want to leave”. “In today’s world we’re inundated with information all the time, there’s so many choices we have to make, so much opportunity”, she said. “We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up”. “Currently binge watching this fantastic show and I’m so saaaaad that it’s final season is around the corner!” While the show is only loosely based on the novel, its screenwriter Julian Fellowes told WTOP in an interview that he read the book before writing the series.
The Star reported that Brendan Coyle, the actor who plays Mr. Bates on the series, said, “For starters, you get recognized everywhere”.

Two years ago, the acclaimed actress told CBS News that she hadn’t seen “Downton Abbey” and when the news outlet asked again if she had remedied the situation, she replied: “No. But they gave me the boxed set. I said you could go for a drink of water, not a trip up the Nile”. “It was delightful but unusual at the same time”. The craziest encounter was Marrakesh. When the “Downton” creators revealed a few weeks later that Season 6 would be the final installment, many assumed that Smith’s departure was the reason for ending the show. Needless to say, the sixth season might be the most epic of all when the producer put it, “we quit while we were ahead”.
