The Cougars (9-4) managed to score 4 unanswered touchdowns, cutting the deficit to 7 points when freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum dove across the goal line for a 4 yard touchdown with 3:30 remaining but could not get the ball back as Utah ran out the clock in Bronco Mendenhall’s last game as BYU’s head coach.
Utah’s offense, to their credit, capitalized on every turnover they were allotted, which was a problem a few weeks back, out side of that, not a lot of good from the offense. Midway through the first quarter, the Utes were already up, 28-0. But Carter and Dominique Hatfield scored on interceptions, Joe Williams had two 1-yard touchdown runs, and quarterback Travis Wilson added another touchdown on a 20-yard run. BYU dominated much of the game, but couldn’t quite dig itself out of the big hole. The Cougars got on the board just before halftime to make it 35-7, and scored three more times before finally running out of time.
The Odds: Utah is a 3 point favorite against BYU. I mean, BYU did have five turnovers after all, and as I mentioned earlier, Utah’s offense averaged only 3.1 yards per play.
Utah defensive back Tevin Carter (9) celebrates after scoring a touchdown against BYU during the first half of the Las Vegas Bowl NCAA college football game Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, in Las Vegas. But with Mendenhall deciding to coach one last game before bolting to Virginia, it appeared as if Utah was going to spend the afternoon humiliating him and the Cougars. The team’s two victories in the first month of the season, were however, impressive wins in Lincoln, Nebraska and at home against Boise State. But the Pac-12 was a different animal; As recently as two seasons ago, the Utes were coming off consecutive five-win campaigns in their new league.
Utah’s front seven didn’t have to work that hard to defend the run game because BYU spent a majority of the game trying to throw its way back into contention. He also rushed for a 4-yard touchdown. Utah has one of the better pass rushes in the country and has notched 33 sacks this season.
Although both BYU and Utah coaches vowed to avoid controversy, it reared its head at a Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl welcome reception Wednesday night. But Head Coach Kyle Whitngham says he believes ending the year with 10 wins is a big step forward for his players. There was talk of making the College Football Playoff at one time, but Utah lost three of six to wrap up the regular season and failed to win the Pac-12 South. The Utes and USC finished with identical conference records, but the Trojans earned the head-to-head tiebreaker. Having to settle for a spot in the Las Vegas Bowl for the second straight year, is in truth, a letdown. for most of the players and coaches. Utah improved to 58-34-4 all time against BYU, including the last five in a row….
“It’s a momentus occasion today to bring Kalani Sitake in as the new football coach at BYU”, Holmoe said.
New Mexico quarterback Lamar Jordan rushed for three touchdowns and threw a 92-yard touchdown pass to Delane Hart-Johnson before leaving the game in the third quarter with an injury.
