An NYPD officer scooped up the boy, whose eyes were red and puffy with tears.
Lemm, of West Harrison in Westchester County, was a member of the 105th Airlift Wing of upstate Newburgh.
Lemm, 45, was killed after an attacker on a motorcycle packed with explosives crashed into a patrol convoy near Bagram Air Field.
Former police commissioner and Marine veteran Ray Kelly also came to pay his last respects.
The NYPD held a moment of silence Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in Lemm’s honor at a graduation ceremony for almost 1,200 new cops.
The bodies of Lemm and Bonacasa arrived at Dover Air Force Base in DE on Wednesday. A monitor at the altar played a slideshow of snapshots of the selfless detective.
“He really was Superman to all those who knew him”, Maj. “That’s why it’s harder still to believe he’s gone”.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan.
“Technical Sgt. Joseph G. Lemm was and remains without doubt a shining example of this calling”, he said.
Lemm’s daughter, Brooke, and son, Ryan, cried as they touched the coffin from the back of the hearse.

On Monday, his casket was flown to Stewart aboard a C-17 aircraft and was welcomed with a solemn ceremony that included members of the 105th Airlift Wing, Lemm’s family and the New York Police Department.
