Australia mulls playing two spinners for Sydney test
MELBOURNE, Australia, CMC -West Indies delivered a better all-round batting display but were overpowered by Australia inside four days to suffer a 177 run defeat in the second Test at the MCG here yesterday.

The bowling performance of Mitchell Marsh on the fourth day of the second Test has been a significant boost to Australia, who have been plagued by injury concerns throughout the summer.
Jermaine Blackwood made 20 before being given leg before off the bowling of Lyon (3-85), but the West Indies sixth wicket proved the toughest for Australia to claim as Denesh Ramdin and captain Jason Holder scored freely. It allows us to really still play three genuine quicks and allows us to play two spinners.
“That certainly helps the scenario, the way he bowled”, Lehmann said of Marsh.
“Sidds could have bowled if he needed to but in the end I thought it was best that he didn’t”.
Australia won the opening test in Hobart by an innings and 212 runs. It was the first century partnership of the series for the West Indians.
“It hurts”, said Holder. “I am still disappointed that they did not put up a better fight but you know still credit to the ways the guys played especially Darren Bravo in the first innings and Denesh Ramdin in the second innings”, said Holder during the post-match news conference.
Hazlewood bowled 41 overs in Melbourne, a workload which McDermott described as “not too bad”, and he will have at least Thursday and Friday to rest up before the Australians have their first optional net session at the SCG on Saturday.
The West Indies’ lack of resistance after Holder’s departure – Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor fell in the following nine deliveries – ensured there was no final day required.
The wickets quickly tumbled.
Another unnecessary controversy. That is how noted Trinidad and Tobago journalist Fazeer Mohammed described the West Indies cricket team’s reaction to his criticisms of the Caribbean side.
It was the first time they batted more than 80 overs in both innings of a Test since 2012.
Yet they have still failed to pass 300 in eight Test innings against Australia this year.
Smith was philosophical about Australia losing three wickets to front-foot no-balls during the Melbourne Test, twice by Pattinson and another from Hazlewood. Khawaja 144, S. Smith 134 not out, J. Burns 128, A. Voges 106 not out) WEST INDIES 1st innings 271 (D.
“I was glad with the way we finished off. Taking that wicket [of Ramdin] just before the new ball was crucial for us”, Smith said.
“If the conditions are going to suit… there s a pretty good chance we could see a second spinner playing”.
