Texas Tech beats Richmond 85-70 for 9th straight win
With offensive coordinator Cam Cameron coaching and calling plays from the sidelines instead of the pressbox for the first time in his three seasons at LSU, the Tigers outgained the Red Raiders 164 yards to 84 in the first quarter and took a 14-6 lead. Texas Tech is going to score some whether LSU is ready to play or not, but they could push 50 if LSU isn’t focused defensively.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette (7) looks over his shoulder at Texas Tech defensive backs Jah’Shawn Johnson (7) and Nigel Bethel (1) as he scores on a 44-yard touchdown during the first half of the Texas Bowl NCAA college football game Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, in Houston. Tech’s rush defense could play to its average and Fournette could have a big day and the Red Raiders could still win if quarterback Brandon Harris throws for less than 100 yards.
While most of the focus will be on Fournette, the Red Raiders will counter with the most prolific passing game in the country led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Fournette had a 2-yard touchdown run and 44-yard touchdown receiving in the first half, sandwiched around D.J. Chark’s 79-yard scoring run on a reverse, for a 21-13 Tigers’ advantage at the break.
If the Tigers are able to run the ball as expected, this game could resemble the Arkansas game in that the number of possessions Texas Tech has on offense could be limited to under ten.
Tigers’ Fournette ran 43 yards for a TD.
The LSU Tigers (8-3) are below the expectations of many but they managed to settle for another chance of winning another bowl game. He maintains there may be some tinkering with his much-criticized offense for next season, but it will continue to revolve around Fournette. Mahomes led the Red Raiders down the field on a 70-yard drive after Fournette’s score.
LSU is 48-3 in non-conference games under Miles….
Miles once called quarterback Brandon Harris “a future for us” while recruiting the four-star prospect from Bossier City. He’s the fifth player in school history to have two 1,000-yard rushing seasons after he ran for 1,103 yards a year ago.
Texas Tech put all of its effort into preventing Fournette from breaking off big plays during the beginning of the game. The university announced shortly after the final regular season game that Miles would be returning as coach. Overall, the Red Raiders are giving up 42.6 points and 540.2 total yards per game.
Leonard Fournette has been the strength of the LSU offense all season. And even if it isn’t, the Texas Bowl has already given us this picture of LSU coach Les Miles. Kingsbury’s crew throws for almost 390 yards a game, the highest total in the Big 12. He has made at least one trey in the past five contests – shooting 52 percent (16 of 31) during the span. He went 2 for 4 against Richmond.
“That was a little different level of speed we were used to”, Kingsbury said of LSU’s defense. “I think we felt tonight that his energy from the sidelines was probably the difference”.

Jakeem Grant set a Texas Tech bowl record with three touchdown receptions. Fournette’s 162.8 yards per game lead the nation.
