Chip Kelly fired after Eagles moves lead to missed playoffs
Kelly, who replaced Andy Reid and led the Eagles to an NFC East title in 2013, was released Tuesday night just before the end of a disappointing season that began with Super Bowl expectations.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, team president Don Smolenski and general manager Howie Roseman travel to Arizona to interview Chip Kelly, who was the coach at the University of Oregon.
More Next up for Chip?
In addition to being head coach, Kelly had effectively served as the team’s general manager with extensive authority over personnel decisions.
Lurie told fans in an email that he decided to make a change after “evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team”.
“I spent the last three seasons evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team”, Lurie said in the letter.to fans “As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change”. “To the extent that we are able, we will try to keep you informed as we go through this process”.
A press conference will be held Wednesday, December 30 at the NovaCare Complex at Noon with Lurie. Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will handle the team’s coaching duties on Sunday during Philadelphia’s regular season finale against the Giants. Vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz was also released, with veteran National Football League personnel man Tom Donahoe taking over as senior director of player personnel. Kelly leaves with a 26-21 record, with his third season being the worst as he made a number of moves that were criticized.
On Tuesday, the Eagles made the official announcement of Kelly’s firing, per USA Today. However, it’s possible that the two sides agreed to mutually part ways, much like Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers did last season.
In Philadelphia, Bradford, Sanchez, Vick or Foles couldn’t save Kelly, and Kelly couldn’t find his quarterback. The Eagles lost at home to New Orleans in the playoffs and missed the postseason in 2014 after starting 9-3.
Philadelphia is just 6-9 this year after winning 10 games in each of Kelly’s first two years at the helm, only making the playoffs during his first season.
Kelly’s tenure won’t go down as a rousing success, but it definitely shouldn’t be remembered as a failure.
Maybe with his new team, Kelly will have that quarterback.
It started when Kelly gained full personnel control. There were many rumors before last year’s draft that Kelly wanted to make a huge trade to acquire the second pick and grab Mariota to run his offense.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that a few weeks ago, he was told by a Titans’ source that Kelly was not on their list of coaching candidates because he was still under contract.

Now plenty of folks are wondering about another piece of timing involving Kelly: exactly when the Tennessee Titans scoop him up. But the story, no matter how it ends up being written, is quite simple: Chip Kelly was done in by two of the biggest coaching cliches. Don’t look for Kelly to go back to the college ranks.
