Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife could be jailed for between seven and 14 years if they are found guilty of torturing an 11-year-old housemaid.
Police have submitted the chargesheet, which accuses the couple of physical torture, to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. When questioned by the police authorities regarding the cause of her injuries, the girl revealed that Hossain and his wife used to hit her, not only with their hands, but also with household utensils. “It seems to me that mine is being ruined”, the veteran of 38 Tests and 51 ODIs said. He then took her to the local police station.
Mr Hossain initially went to police on September 6, claiming his maid had gone missing.
The charges have been brought under legislation created to protect women and children from domestic abuse. After the girl’s statement, Hossain handed himself over to the police on October 5.
The case is to be heard on 12 January.
Bangladesh has a lengthy tradition of child labour but the employment of those under 14 has been banned since 2006.
The 29-year-old cricketer, who denies any wrongdoing, was suspended from all forms of the game on September 13 over the allegations.
