Canada plays Switzerland at world juniors
A pair of Detroit Red Wings prospects played prominent roles in Canada’s 3-2 shootout victory over Switzerland Tuesday at the World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland.

However, in the dying seconds Dylan Strome was able to find the net for Canada and his effort provided them a platform to get back into the contest in the second period, with Joe Hicketts drawing the defending champions level in the 32nd minute.
Team Canada wraps up the preliminary round on Thursday, December 31 when they take on Team Sweden at 11:00 a.m. MT/10:00 a.m. PT.
Canada overcame a two-goal first period deficit to edge a desperate Swiss team to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals. Meier and Rod both had goals and were very good as was defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler who barely left the ice throughout the game.
Canada trailed winless Switzerland by two goals late in the opening period Tuesday. Both Swiss shooters were stopped by Mackenzie Blackwood.
Entering the third tied in goals and shots on goal (17), Canada’s attack heightened, outshooting the Swiss 14-7, but failed to convert on another man-advantage in the third period, keeping the score even. Canada’s power play finished the day 0-for-4.
Brayden Point also scored in the shootout for the Canadians. Blackwood sat out the first two games as part of his eight-game suspension incurred in the Ontario Hockey League. But Strome, from the corner, just put the puck toward the net and it was enough to fool Swiss goalie Joren van Pottelberghe.
A scoreless third period and five-minute session of four-on-four overtime set up Barzal’s and Point’s shootout heroics.
The victory saw Canada move clear into second place in the Group B standings behind unbeaten Sweden, who face Denmark tomorrow.

The Canadians seemed off their game, rattled at the fast, physical play displayed by the Swiss.
