Chip Kelly Fired After Eagles Moves Result in Missed Playoffs
It was stunning only that he fired Kelly as the Eagles coach on Tuesday night and didn’t wait until the Eagles ended the season Sunday against the Giants at MetLife Stadium, but the speculation had been going on for weeks that this was going to end ugly.

We’ll have full coverage on the aftermath of Kelly’s firing Wednesday, including notes from Lurie’s press conference at noon. Formerly the general manager who had control over final personnel matters in Philly, Roseman lost that role when Lurie gave Kelly the ability to make decisions on the roster last offseason. Chip Kelly won the division in just his first year, the only coach in franchise history to do so.
Sure, there’s been worse Eagles squads than the current 2015 edition, but the way things got out of control so quickly makes the series of events leading to Kelly’s dismissal so utterly disappointing. That will allow the Eagles to get a jump on some of the hot assistant coaches who will be available, including Sean McDermott, the Carolina Panthers’ defensive coordinator who once held the same title with the Eagles.
Kelly reportedly had a Tuesday afternoon meeting with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie that apparently didn’t go well.
Kelly had previously served as head football coach at the University of OR where the team compiled an outstanding 46-7 record during his four years in charge and his reputation was based on a high-speed offense. He went 10-6 in his first two seasons with the Eagles. “Lurie is a smart guy and he wants a victor so he’s not going to keep the guys that aren’t producing for him”, said Greg Di Bruno of South Philadelphia. It steadily declined the next two years. He believed a system that worked in college, with superior athletes playing at a faster pace than most teams, would translate smoothly to the NFL.
There is no way on God’s green earth that the fans of Detroit would ever welcome Kelly to coach their team.
“A source close to the situation said Lurie told confidantes, even before the Eagles were eliminated from playoff contention last weekend, that he wanted to ‘take back the team'”. But the story, no matter how it ends up being written, is quite simple: Chip Kelly was done in by two of the biggest coaching cliches.
And so another grand experiment ends, one more cautionary tale of a college coach who doesn’t have what it takes in the NFL. That same trio oversaw the coaching search in 2013, when Kelly replaced Andy Reid. And if that struggling team happens to be Tennessee with former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota in place, I’m on the phone with Chip before lunch. He traded quarterback Nick Foles to the Rams for Sam Bradford, coming off consecutive seasons of ACL surgery. It wouldn’t be a major surprise to see Kelly on the sidelines on a college campus in 2016, but he is still looking to prove his style of play will work at the professional level and that determination could lead to him coaching along Lake Erie next season.

But the Eagles announced on Tuesday night that it was over and Kelly was done, effective immediately. “I’m sure he’s disappointed just like everybody else in here is disappointed”.
