Steelers loss puts playoffs further away
The Steelers need to win and have Buffalo beat the Jets at home to get into the playoffs as the sixth seed in the AFC.

The Steelers will need some help to get into the postseason after falling to the Ravens 20-17 on Sunday.
“The scoreboard is going to be in the stadium so I think everybody is going to be looking at the scoreboard towards the end of the game”, Shazier said, “but we’ve got to handle our business first”. I’ve played this game for a long time and, especially at the quarterback position, you have to have short-term memory both good and bad. “Obviously, they did a good job of stopping us today, but we still had a couple of times to make plays”. “We just have to take care of what we have to take care of”.
Their final regular-season game against the Cleveland Browns Sunday allows the Steelers a chance not only to squeeze into the playoffs, but to cleanse themselves.
“Ryan Mallett“, Harbaugh said when asked after the game who would start next week’s finale against Cincinnati, drawing laughter from reporters.
Making his seventh career start – the first with Baltimore – Ryan Mallett went 28 for 41 for a career-high 274 yards and a touchdown.
The Ravens may have been confident, but they got far more than they ever could have expected from QB Ryan Mallett whom they claimed and signed on December 15. A win over the Bengals could force Cincy to play during the first week of the playoffs and not get the bye.
Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith intercepted Ben Roethlisberger’s tipped pass and found nothing in front of him for a 101-yard touchdown return. “You go from controlling your own destiny to not”.
Indeed, by consistently converting on third down, the Ravens held a substantial edge in time of possession 34:20-25:40. On fourth-and-15 at the Pittsburgh 37-yard line, a pass from Roethlisberger to Markus Wheaton fell incomplete after the two-minute warning. The Browns looked competitive for much of the game against the Chiefs last week, but they’re once again the likely recipient of the top draft pick in this coming May’s NFL Draft unless they can pull off a surprising upset and hand the Steelers their second disappointing loss in a row. In this one, however, they turned back the Steelers (9-6), who were riding a three-game winning streak and striving for a playoff berth.
“We are just focused on this week’s challenge”, Tomlin said.
Javorius Allen, a rookie fourth round running back, had a career-high 79 yards and a touchdown.
“When you put yourself in that situation, largely I like the way our group has responded”, Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference.
The Ravens (5-10) had lost three straight, the past two by a combined 69-20 score.
“Right now, we shot ourselves in the foot”, linebacker James Harrison said. Smith had two costly pass interference penalties but also got a key interception. He is now 27-for-29 in his first National Football League season.

As a result, Baltimore avoided another duplication of its inaugural season in a dubious way, not having to suffer a four-game losing streak to go along with two earlier three-game negative runs. His backup Terrance West also ran hard and had 42 yards on 13 carries. That didn’t happen versus the Ravens, giving Mallett all the time he needed to extend drives and keep Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown on the sideline. Although the numbers don’t seem impressive with Baltimore’s leading receiver catching eight balls for 66 yards, the secondary let Mallett target and hit seven different receivers.
