Global results exclude China, where the film premiered on Sunday but will only open to the public on January 9, according to Disney.

For Hollywood, China has become very important because it has been a source of bigger revenue when the home audience fails to be impressed by a film project.

But analysts say powerhouse attractions such as “The Force Awakens” – coupled with upgraded theater features such as immersive sound, improved sight lines, and even dinner and drinks – can help win back straying movie buffs.

Not counting that weekly box-office reports don’t generally factor in a film’s production or marketing costs, the theater chains also split ticket sales with studios.

With the holiday week here for many, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had a strong Monday at the box office where it fell just 28% off of what Sunday was.

The previous record was held by “Jurassic World”, which hit the milestone 18 days after it was released, including China sales. Avatar, while still planning a future of sequels, has largely been a one-off success with little to no cultural impact in the years since.

Disney and Lucasfilm couldn’t have hoped for a better reception, both critically and financially. It seriously nearly happened, and some fans are bummed that Hayden Christensen’s former character didn’t make the cut for the film. “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” is sixth at $1.41 billion, followed by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” at $1.34 billion, “Frozen” at $1.28 billion and “Iron Man 3” at $1.22 billion.
