Two suspected of plotting attacks in Belgium arrested
Two people have been arrested after Belgian investigators uncovered plans for terrorist attacks that would target landmarks in the capital Brussels during New Year’s festivities, prosecutors said Tuesday.

According to police spokesperson Johan Berckmans, an internal investigation has been launched to determine whether or not the accused participated in said “lewd acts” during their two-week stay at the police barracks.
The prosecutor’s office said the arrests were not linked to November’s deadly Paris terror attacks, which authorities said involved a number of militants who had been living in Belgium.
Police found military clothing and Islamic State propaganda and computer material which investigators are examining, but no weapons or explosives.
“Analysis shows a serious and imminent threat that requires taking specific security measures as well as specific recommendations for the public”, an official statement said at the time.
The prosecutor’s office said six people were brought in for questioning and all but two were released. Still, prosecutors have continued their investigation announcing a steady stream of searches and arrests connected to on going terror investigations.
One suspect, who is believed to be the chief plotter, is expected to be charged with leading a terrorist organization and recruiting others for terrorist purposes.
Their main quarry, however, was not there: Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who went on to become the suspected ringleader of the November 13 attacks in Paris. The city’s mayor ordered all restaurants and cafes to close after the government, fearing terror attacks, raised the alert level to level four – “very serious” – for the Brussels region.
The arrests come as security sources warn Islamists could strike several European cities on New Year’s Eve and have told national security services to be on guard.
Numerous terrorists in that attack are believed to have links to Belgium.
Counter-terror police arrested the two people in the Mamak district in the outskirts of the capital, the private NTV television reported.
