Your Washington driver’s license may not get you on airplanes in 2016
That leaves just five states that have been deemed noncompliant, have not been granted an extension and do not have extensions under review: Illinois; Minnesota; Missouri; New Mexico; and Washington.

The move stems from the Real ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005 as part of the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, and involves stepped-up standards for issuing the licenses.
As of October 10, the Act has prohibited Missourians from entering federal facilities or military bases until they comply with the REAL ID Act. The regulations have gone unenforced until now. And DHS could still decide to postpone its decision, according to a DHS spokeswoman. “Minnesota and American Samoa are already listed as non-compliant”, wrote Ars Technica’s Joe Mullin. Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands face the same deadline.
Driver’s licenses from some states might not be enough to get through a security checkpoint at an airport because of the 10-year-old REAL ID Act.
Children under the age of 18 will not be required to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States as long as the companion has acceptable identification. Regardless, the TSA is taking steps to prepare for a security screening process where some state IDs are not accepted.
If you don’t have your driver’s license or any other REAL ID-compliant form of ID, you might still be able to get on your flight, but not before having to fill out a form and answer a few questions, which might be worse than a surprise pat-down. State leaders believed the changes made it easier to share user’s private information.

An announcement of when changes at the TSA will take place is expected by the end of the year. In recent months, DHS has been telling states those delays are over and that the law will be implemented in 2016. The combined population of the 28 states that are not in compliance with Real ID comes to 217 million people, more than two-thirds of the U.S. population. Politicians in these two states passed legislation in 2009 prohibiting the implementation of Real ID.
