Kansas case included in new E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle
Health officials have still not found the cause of an E. coli outbreak at restaurants owned by Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. There’s no word yet whether this outbreak is related to the bigger, original one that has since affected 53, including one new case from Pennsylvania.

STILL LESS CONCERNED: William Blair analyst Sharon Zackfia, conversely, says she still expects Chipotle to emerge “largely unscathed” over the longer term from the E. coli incidents that have plagued it recently.
The new outbreak case count is: Kansas (1), North Dakota (1), and Oklahoma (3).
That said, the five people who have gotten sick from the new strain all reported eating at a Chipotle Mexican Grill in the week before illness started. The most recent of the illness reported by the CDC started November 13. Twenty of them have required hospitalization. they began getting sick October 19 with the most recent confirmed case having begun on November 14.
The CDC released information about the new illnesses as part of an update on the wider outbreak. The school said it was working with local health officials to determine the cause of the illness.
In total, almost 500 people have been sickened after two Chipotle-related E.coli and norovirus outbreaks since this past summer.
On Oct. 31, an outbreak of E. coli was first linked to the chain, mostly in Washington and Oregon.
“We have indicated before that we expected that we may see additional cases stemming from this, and CDC is now reporting some additional cases”, the company said in a statement.
“While it is never possible to completely eliminate all risk, this program eliminates or mitigates risk to a level near zero, ” he said earlier this month. “We are now in the process of implementing those programs…”, Chris Arnold, Chipotle communications director, said in an email to CNN, emphasizing that the CDC does not know whether the new cases are linked. The company has dedicated a web page to explaining its renewed food safety commitments.
“The preliminary test that was done on the sample was a polymerase chain reaction test, which is commonly used to rapidly screen for the presence of the DNA of a bacteria, in this case E. coli O157:H7”, according to the FDA.
