According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), as of November 27, there has been a total of 121 flu-associated hospitalizations, which is 81 fewer cases than a year ago.
The exact number of flu-related deaths is hard to ascertain because the flu is often a complication of another condition so may not be recorded on death certificates for adults, according to the CDC.
In South Dakota, only eight have been reported as of December 19. Northampton County has about 38 cases, while rests are of the Lehigh Valley.
“We have that intermittent period where we’re not seeing a lot of flu, and people just don’t think about it”, he said.
It’s a welcome change.
While a balmy December may have kept people outdoors and not spreading viruses, the first real cold snap of the winter Monday is a harbinger of influenza yet to come. Experts believe that last season’s flu vaccine was a poor match to the dominant flu strain. Tim Murphy (R-PA) and Diana DeGette (D-CO)-sent a letter to Dr. Nicole Lurie, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the Department of Health and Human Services, expressing concern about the age and effectiveness of the nation’s stockpile of pre-pandemic vaccines.
“It’s not unusual in my experience to have flu seasons in our area that don’t really crank up until after the new year”, he said.
During the last flu season, 340 people in El Paso County were hospitalized because of flu symptoms.
Due in part, to a mismatch in the vaccine.
Schabas thinks our flu immunity is likely the biggest factor in this year’s low flu numbers. And now, the most extensive research to date, which looked at 275,000 births, confirms that the vaccine doesn’t increase adverse fetal outcomes.
“Their immune systems aren’t working as well”.
Many people who have gotten the vaccine can misinterpret the flu for the common cold and other viruses.
And yes, the unseasonably warm weather could be having a positive effect as well.
In a typical season, flu complications – including pneumonia – send more than 200,000 Americans to the hospital.
Even so, Jahre warned against being lulled into a false sense of security.
The influenza vaccine is available free of charge to all Albertans six months of age and older. UCLA’s California Health Interview Survey revealed that only 43 percent Californians received flu shots in 2014.

The legislators have questioned whether the stockpiled vaccine would protect against newly emerging strains, such as a highly pathogenic H5N2 type that hit the poultry in several USA states. Though the trivalent covers a narrower spectrum of the virus, its high-dose form, which contains four times as much antigen, has been shown to be far more effective in older patients than the quadrivalent.
