Volunteers will be at the NORAD call center 24 hours on Christmas Eve, so that everyone around the world gets a chance to call in.

Children all over the world are anxiously waiting for Santa Claus and his reindeer to arrive, and NORAD is helping them follow Santa’s route. NORAD’s online tracker plays Christmas tunes while flying reindeer pull a red sleigh over images of the Earth provided by NASA.
A system of radar stations and satellites monitor all air traffic that enter USA and Canadian airspace.
“During this season of giving, we agreed to waive the normal application fees and entry inspection/overtime costs”, said Dr. John Clifford, the USDA’s Chief Veterinary Officer. All aircraft are reported to have a unique code to identify themselves.
Writing to fans on Facebook, NORAD said: “Thank you for letting us be part of the magic Santa”.
“Then Mrs. Claus and I look at what we’ve done in the past year and start making plans for the next year already”.
The route, which usually Santa do, starts leaving the North Pole crossing the Pacific Ocean, where it begins to deliver presents in island nations, and then he heads west on the northern and southern hemispheres.
When a child called in to CONAD on Christmas Eve asking where Santa was, man-in-charge Colonel Harry Shoup first thought it was a prank call. Of course, both have plenty of less educational games too, from Google’s elf-filled music maker to Microsoft’s Flapping Bird.
The tradition began in 1955 when a media advertisement directed children to call Santa direct, but the number was misprinted and rang through to the crew commander at the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center. Shoup assigned a couple of airmen to answer the line and act like St. Nick, Shoup’s daughter Pamela Farrell recounted to StoryCorps.

Santa says that he is excited for his big night out and has a tip for little ones leaving him goodies. The Facebook likes, Twitter followers, phone calls and OnStar questions were all record highs for NORAD Tracks Santa. NORAD replaced CONRAD in 1958, and the tradition has since continued for 60 years.
