Nick Saban, Mark Dantonio agree
Both 12-1 teams meet Thursday in the College Football Playoff semifinals at AT&T Stadium.

Alabama and Michigan State were supposed to play each other about nine months from now in Tuscaloosa, Ala., but Nick Saban ended that idea.
The day before Alabama cornerback Tony Brown was sent home from Dallas for violating team rules he said he hoped to improve his “emotional consistency” in 2016.
Who knew Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio could be king of the one-liners? They’ve won four straight bowl games. In each of the eight aforementioned encounters with a former employee, Saban’s program has posted at least 29 points each time (38.9 pts/gm) while never surrendering more than 21 points (11.0 pts/gm). Only two days remain from playing for a chance to get to the College Football Playoff National Championship game in Glendale, Arizona. Covering a 10-point spread against a Spartans defense that has permitted an average of just 20.5 points per game this season may seem like a tall order, but that line hasn’t detracted the sharp bettors one bit from backing Alabama.
Mark Dantonio and Nick Saban settled in at an elevated table at the end of a ball room at the Omni Dallas Hotel, the College Football Playoff national trophy between them, years of history together behind them.
The Crimson Tide boss thinks there are “tremendous benefits” to the current playoff system. Over at the Westgate, Sherman told Covers that Alabama was the most popular position amongst their sophisticated clientele. Dantonio has led this team to 11 or more wins five of the last six seasons.
Smart also needs to worry about Michigan State’s stable of running backs.
Saban said it was a simple case of an Alabama team that had underachieved during the season having something to prove in the bowl game that year. In addition, Sherman indicated that the biggest public bet the Westgate took this bowl season was in support of Northwestern. Since 2010, Alabama and Michigan State have the top two statistical defenses in the FBS.
“My concern was, if we had a playoff, all the attention would go to the playoff, and we would minimize the importance of those (other bowl) games for all those other players”, he said. “My assistants would say the same about me”. “We’ll need to be at our best, play at our best because our best is going to be needed here”. “So it’s a lot of football games”. “However, I still believe that -4 is a steal”. “And you’ve got to know what you’re up against when you play against people like that”.

Saban gave Dantonio a ringing endorsement and with little fanfare Michigan State hired a program-changing head coach of its own.
