SCORE UPDATES: LSU 21, Texas Tech 6 – 2nd QTR
According to Perry, he has a “curious” relationship with Texas Tech.

What was so curious about the strategy? In some ways, the second half was a clash of two exceptional football players, and that Leonard Fournette guy from LSU came out on top. LSU gives up an average of 131.4 yards per game rushing, ninth-best in the nation, and it reached that total going up against backs like Heisman Trophy victor Derrick Henry and Arkansas’ Alex Collins, whose three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons are matched only by big names such as Herschel Walker and Darren McFadden.
In the end, good offensive sense won out.
So, to me, the difference will be how LSU shows up and whether Fournette can take over this game right away. The result was a hard-fought but redemptive 56-27 victory before a packed, tortilla-throwing crowd (on the Texas Tech side) at NRG Stadium.
LSU’s 56 points broke the school record for points in a bowl game and set a new Texas Bowl for points by a single team.
On paper, this seems like a great matchup for Fournette, and the oddsmakers see it that way as well. “He has a feel for where the ball is coming off. I’ve said all along that he is our best all-around player”.
He would go 212 yards on 29 carries, scoring 5 touchdowns, 4 rushing and the Tiger’s only receiving touchdown. Texas Tech outrebounded Richmond 42-19 and connected on 22 of 27 free throws. So instead, I’ll take this spot to point out that much-maligned quarterback Brandon Harris had a pretty good night, too.
“We’d expect him to have nights like this”, Miles said of Fournette, according to the Advocate. “He’s fast and strong and capable”. It was vintage Fournette – a simple cut back run out of the I-formation.
But when the Tigers did throw the ball, it got an efficient game from quarterback Brandon Harris, who completed 13 of his 22 attempts for 254 yards with one touchdown, one interception, while adding 35 more yards on the ground. The Red Raiders usually couldn’t wait for him to get downfield, though, as LSU sacked Mahomes six times.
Texas Tech hosts Big 12 rival Texas on Saturday. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was looking for receiver Tony Brown, saw his pass spiked in the air.
Keehn’s punt was caught by safety Jamal Adams at the TTU 5, where the Red Raiders went three-and-out.
Five plays later, Fournette finished the drive.
Had Green dropped that tipped pass in the back of the end zone, Kliff Kingsbury’s squad wouldn’t have ever been pitted against the Tigers. The game was played while a severe winter storm was impacting Texas. With 8:16 to play, LSU led 49-27.
Lsu Tigers scored 48.9 points compared to allowed 40.3 points with point differential of 8.7. Virginia Tech transfer Marshall Wood has been solid off the bench, contributing 9.7 points and 4.6 rebounds.
While Fournette was doing what he had done all season in leading the nation rushing, the LSU pass rush kept Texas Tech’s offense from doing what it had done all season.
Texas Tech closed the gap when Grant grabbed a 46-yard touchdown pass, but the 2-point conversion failed and the score was 7-6.

Kingsbury saw enough glimmer from his offense to be optimistic about next season, particularly with Mahomes back for his junior year. “Defensively, we have got to get a lot better”.
