Bill Cosby arrested for raping woman in 2004; Twitter reacts
Until now, Cosby’s resources had secured for him the invaluable prize of time: He had bought his way past numerous statutes of limitations, but not the 12-year clock set by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, where Andrea Constand alleged that Cosby drugged and assaulted her in 2004 in his suburban Philadelphia home.

He has been charged with aggravated indecent assault in a case that sets the stage for one of the biggest Hollywood celebrity trials, and which could see the 78-year-old jailed in the twilight of his life.
This year, Mr Castor said the allegations in the woman’s lawsuit were more serious than the account she gave police, and if that information had been known at the time, “we might have been able to make a case”.
More than 50 women have publicly claimed abuse by American comedian Bill Cosby, who attained his gre … Constand reported the incident in 2005, which left prosecutors until January 1, 2016 to charge Cosby before the 12-year statute of limitations ran out.
Steele said the charges stemmed from new evidence in the case that came to light in July, prompting the reopening of the investigation.
Pennsylvania prosecutors reopened the case over the summer as damaging testimony was unsealed in a related civil lawsuit against Cosby and as dozens of other women came forward with similar accusations. In that lawsuit, which was eventually settled out of court, Constand accused the comedian of sexual assault when she worked at Temple University.
It’s the first criminal charges against Cosby over his conduct with women, which has received new scrutiny in the past year.
Steele says that after seeing the deposition material “reopening this case was not a question, rather it was our duty”.
Cosby’s lawyer declined to comment on the charge before the announcement.
Constand expressed gratitude via her legal team.
We’ll note that while NPR doesn’t usually identify people who say they’re the victims of sexual assault, we’ve done so in this case, because Constand has taken a public stand on the case.
Prosecutors also said there are probably other women who were similarly drugged and violated by Cosby. Steele said the victim had said she was willing to cooperate with prosecutors.
Cosby has adamantly denied all of the allegations. She said the judge in the case will have to decide whether to allow other accusers to testify or whether that would be too prejudicial.

Prosecutors said Cosby used wine and drugs to render her incapable of resistance after “the much younger, athletic” Constand blocked two previous sexual advances.
