Pennsylvania law has a 12-year statute of limitations for sexual assault cases, a window that closes early next year. But police in Los Angeles have been investigating more recent allegations by another accuser, Chloe Goins, who says Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 2008, when she was 18.
The actor is best known for playing Dr. Cliff Huxtable, the family patriarch in the TV sitcom “The Cosby Show”, which was one of America’s highest rated television shows in the 1980s.
Cosby, who makes his home mostly in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, testified that he obtained quaaludes in the 1970s to give to women “the same as a person would say, ‘Have a drink.'” He denied giving women drugs without their knowledge.
The TV star acknowledged under oath a decade ago that he had sexual contact with Constand but said it was consensual. Constand “leaned forward to stop him”, at which point he got up and went to his kitchen, the affidavit says.
Formal accusations date back at least 10 years, when Constand went to police with her complaint.
Cosby was charged days before the statute of limitations was due to run out on the case involving Constand. Ms Constand eventually settled a lawsuit against Cosby in 2006 on confidential terms.
On Wednesday, Steele outlined a timeline of events in 2004, saying Cosby established a friendship with the victim and then made sexual advances that were rejected.
She says she otherwise will not comment on the criminal case.
It’s the first criminal charge against Cosby over his conduct with women, which has received new scrutiny in the past year.
