Program-changers: Dantonio faces old boss Saban in playoff
For now, the next step for MSU is Alabama, inarguably the most dominant football program of this decade, and fittingly the head coach of the Crimson Tide is Nick Saban, who began his head coaching career at MSU in the mid 1990s. “And I think the world should recognize what a great job he’s done”. If it wasn’t for Saban, Dantonio and the Spartans might not be where they are today.

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Michigan State Spartans meet up in the Cotton Bowl on Wednesday as part of the College Football Playoff.
Alabama played in only two games decided by less than 13 points, but they are better on both sides of the football. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN.
“You’re only an underdog if you think you’re an underdog”, Spartans coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday. You could also talk to Jim McElwain, who lost to Saban while running the show at Colorado State and again in this year’s SEC Championship game as the head coach of the Florida Gators.
In case you’re late to the party, I’ve got some old news for you – Yes, they are.
“Yeah, we’re the obvious underdog, and we’re going to embrace it”, said quarterback Connor Cook. I root for the Spartans quite a bit, quietly.
Michigan State’s current situation feels familiar.
Michigan State, a double-digit underdog, isn’t sounding like a group that will lay down in the biggest game in school history.
“You just have to prepare right for them because of what they do”.
Indeed, the Michigan State locker room was in such poor shape, the Spartans avoided taking recruits there when prospects came in for visits. “You clearly define “here are the things that we need to do to be able to accomplish that goal.’ Now the most hard thing is ‘Can we have the discipline to execute it everyday and not be affected by external factors”, said Saban. “We’re not focused on outsiders talking about how we’re going to lose this game”. “We’ll probably get to kick off”.
MSU athletic director Mark Hollis said last week of the series and Alabama: “They wanted a neutral-site game and now they’ve got a neutral-site game”.
“The whole “You Like That” thing, it’s amusing”, said Cook.

“Like I said, living the dream”. I can’t function looking backwards. That’s why I still root for Michigan State.
