Arsenal fans around the Transfer Tavern celebrating the fact that they sit top of the Premier League heading into the New Year have seen the discussions quickly alter, amid confirmation that a first-team ace could be lost.
Wenger’s side recovered from a Boxing Day hiding at Southampton to beat Bournemouth on Monday and face struggling Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium this weekend looking to keep hold of top spot.
But the latest medical update is a more positive one and Wenger said: “He could make it back for February or even earlier”.
Wenger indicated France global defender Mathieu Debuchy could be on his way out after being sidelined this season by injury and the emergence of youngster Hector Bellerin. “Considering England play the Euros on June 10, that is a long way”.
‘It’s not impossible, ‘ he said when asked about Debuchy’s potential exit. “We will see.” The former Newcastle and Lille player was France’s first choice right-back at the 2014 World Cup but has not represented his country since September with Sagna and Lucas Digne providing stiff competition for places in Didier Deschamps’s squad.
“I believe that we are mature enough and that we have the requested quality to fight and compete”.
