CT vs. Marshall: St. Petersburg Bowl Recap, Score
Each team scored only one touchdown and combined for only a single play of at least 20 yards through the first three quarters in what was 16-10 victory for the Thundering Herd at Tropicana Field.

The Huskies got within 13-10 on Bobby Puyol’s 52-yard field goal with two seconds left in the third. Marshall is one win away from back-to-back-to-back 10-win seasons, which would make them the first Power Five program to ever accomplish that feat.
THE SKINNY: If you’re a fan of solid defensive battles, consider this your post-Christmas present from Santa Football. During one stretch late in the first quarter and extending into the latter portions of the third quarter, Marshall had the ball for 56 out of 69 plays and outgained the Huskies 253-55.
CT finished the season at 6-6 to qualify for the postseason for the first time since its 2010 Fiesta Bowl appearance.
UConn football coach Bob Diaco thinks he has the flawless way to cap off your holiday season. A 13-play, 75-yard drive was capped by Ron Johnson’s eight-yard run with 1:51 left in the first quarter. Their top weapon is running back Arkeel Newsome, who leads the team with 760 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.
Much like their first series with the ball, the Huskies had no answer for the Herd’s swarming defense as Steve Dillon dropped quarterback Bryant Shirreffs in the backfield for a loss of five. Marshall opened the quarter with a long sustained drive down to the UCONN 8-yard line, but failed to move the chains on third and seven. Today they’re ranked 123rd of 127 teams in the FBS in total offense and 121st in scoring after a poor showing in their final game of the season, dropping the Huskies to 6-7 and cementing a fifth consecutive losing season.
UConn finishes the season 6-7. A 26-yard punt return by Deandre Reaves gave Marshall the football on the UConn 20-yard line.
UConn stopped Marshall on fourth and 2 at the 17 on the initial drive of the second half after the Thundering Herd opted to skip a field goal try that could have made it 16-7.

Reeves, who had a game-high 137 all-purpose yards, was named the game’s most valuable player. Reaves caught nine passes, tying a bowl record, and had a 26-yard punt return in his final game for Marshall. The Thundering Herd roster includes 25 players fro the state of Florida. Freshman quarterback Chase Litton has shown flashes of promise this season, including throwing for 486 yards and two touchdowns against Charlotte, and should benefit from the extra bowl practices. One completion brought the Huskies near midfield, but a sack and some great pass defense from Marshall resulted in a turnover on downs. Marshall had five tackles for loss totaling 13 yards. The Huskies beat conference champion Houston and lost by a touchdown to what turned out to be a pretty good South Florida team. Shirreffs only threw 17 passes, completing 10 for 86 yards, but he carried the ball 19 times for a team-high 75 yards. Passes to Aaron McLean and Mayala fell to the turf after that.
