Google sets aside $1m in grants to boost security of Drive
The blog is in reference to the research grant program the company already has in use to protect Google Drive. The program is called the Vulnerability Reward and Google promises to give $20,000 to anyone who reports a real issue through this program. Google started to provide security research grants in 2015, and the $1 million funding is more than it has offered before.

Although Drive from Google still remains to be adopted by large enterprises on a large scale for data storage, recent efforts of Google towards improving Drive indicate towards the possible future path of Drive. Grant amounts vary from $500 to $3,133.7. Organizations are increasingly opting for various cloud services for their data storage needs, thus also inviting needs for a more robust security infrastructure in place. The company said this is particularly important since even small mistakes in sensitive services could have grave consequences.
While paying security researchers a bounty every time they discover bugs is an idea that Google has been supporting since 2010, the idea of offering researchers grants even in cases where they don’t find any new vulnerabilities is still a relatively new one.
Aside from the this measure, the conglomerate’s executives have recently announced that they made a decision to dedicate $1,000,000 to independent research assessing the file hosting software’s vulnerability when it comes to cyber attacks.
Google employs more than 500 security experts, but the company also relies on a network of independent researchers, and that’s where the grants and vulnerability awards come in. “Receiving a grant and not finding anything doesn’t affect your chances of receiving a new one”.
