While the talk was mostly centred on “positives”, a source said, “Sharif was really relaxed… and he used Punjabi humour to keep everyone at ease, from the word go”. “It is really rare for leaders from the two countries to refrain from putting the other person in a spot, at least once”, the source said. Modi had begun his term by inviting Sharif, along with leaders from other South Asian nations, to his oath-taking ceremony in May previous year.
The prime minister also urged the general public to change the way the physically challenged people are being addressed by them.
“Aap Lahore mein ghar aa jayiye, Lahore ke darwaze bhi aap ke liye khule hain (Come to my Lahore home, the doors of Lahore are also open for you)”, the official quoted Sharif as telling the Indian PM.
In a statement on Saturday, the Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Modi instead of fulfilling his election promises of ushering in acche din (good days) for the aam aadmi (common man), is more focused on foreign affairs with numerous visits to foreign shores.
Talks between India and Pakistan have resumed after a dramatic turnaround in ties in the last month, topped off by a surprise visit to Lahore by PM Modi last week.
Speaking in his 15th episode of the monthly radio programme, Modi said the Government is trying to boost entrepreneurship at the grassroots and job creation and for that an action plan on “Start-up India” will be unveiled on January 16. Recently the External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj had visited Pakistan to attend the 5 Heart of Asia summit in December 2015.
It is understood that both leaders expressed their desire to take the dialogue process forward; Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary, Mr Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, told the media the visit was a “goodwill gesture” from India.
“The visit of Prime Minister to Afghanistan was very important keeping in view India’s strategic interests”.
He demanded action on terrorism, with Delhi viewing Pakistan as harbouring terrorists that target India, and progress in the trial of seven Pakistani suspects of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. “A blueprint will be presented on that day”, he said while extending his “greetings for Christmas and New Year to every citizen of India”.
