Auburn overcomes sloppy stretch to put away Memphis, 31-10
On the flip side, there might not be a worse exclamation point of disappointment to end a season than losing a bowl game to a Group of 5 team in what is essentially a home game for the Tigers.

In a bowl matchup of the SEC and the AAC, the Auburn Tigers used a dominant defense to roll to a 31-10 win over the Memphis Tigers in Birmingham.
The second half was all Auburn.
The story of the game was the Auburn defense, which held Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch to just 104 yards passing on 38 attempts. This game has the look of an upset, with Memphis doing enough to pull out a tight win, 31-30.
According to some reports, Ball initially stole the football from an Auburn equipment bag and made a run for it. After avoiding several Auburn staffers, he finally got away for good by shoving his way loose, as seen in the video. And there was talk that a handful of players might leave early for the NFL.
Peyton Barber. He got his 1000 yards on the season and kept the Auburn streak of 7 straight seasons with a 1000 yard rusher alive.
“Our defense was outstanding”, said Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn, who won a bowl game for the first time as a head coach.
Ball had two interceptions in the game and returned one of them 53 yards for a touchdown before his postgame antics. Jeremy Johnson was reliable by completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns with seven interceptions.
Memphis moved the ball deep into Auburn territory on the first drive of the second half, but Lynch forced one into traffic near the goal line and was intercepted by Tray Matthews.
Lynch has a chance to be the highest drafted prospect from Memphis since Dontari Poe was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs (11th overall) and then DeAngelo Williams (27th overall) before him.
Johnson gave Auburn a 17-10 lead with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jason Smith. All Auburn quarterback Shaun White has to do to turn this from an automatic gain of 5 yards into a game-changing play is hit Marcus Davis, who is completely unguarded and can run for days.
And while the quarterback position is still a major question mark for Auburn (7-6) moving forward, the win is a nice way to move into the offseason.
This victory closed the door on a season that’ll put Malzahn on the hot seat going forward, but it also gave a number of the program’s constituents exactly what they needed.

White, playing after missing the last two games with a knee and foot injury, said he had an up-and-down season. “Our defense was outstanding, our offense in the second half really took the game over, but I’m extremely happy for our seniors to get these guys out with a bowl win”.
