State officials hope this year’s First Day Hikes will go off without a hitch. Bring plenty of water for yourself and your pet, a snack if needed, and start 2016 off right.
The guided hike will begin at 1 p.m., starting at the Hatfield East Trailhead in Mosier. A park ranger will lead the hike and will teach about the wildlife and history of the island. Dogs must be on leash. In case of inclement weather, the park should be contacted directly at 503-969-8235 for cancellations. “We don’t just have one or two hikes on New Years Day, we want to keep people out there all year long and this year we are instituting a 50 hikes challenge”, said Stabenow.
According to a news release from the department, the 2-mile North Shores Trail is moderate in difficulty.
It’s part of First Day Hikes, an event also sponsored by America’s State Parks.
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.
In the Willamette Valley and Cascades area, seven state parks are hosting hikes and other outdoor activities.
The hike to the Big Horn Overlook is moderately hard and is 2.5 miles roundtrip.
While nearby Lory State Park isn’t participating in the event, you can still get out for a foothills hike on your own on the day normally reserved for football watching and hangovers.
Dead Horse Point State Park. Admission to the park is $7; free for ages 12 and younger.
Red Fleet State Park. For more information on this hike, the park can be reached at 435-648-2800. Dogs on leashes are welcome.
Snow Canyon is near St. George.
Snow Canyon State Park. That hike starts at noon. An interpretive ranger will lead hikers along the easy 1-mile hike along the Linda C. Higley Nature Trail. In addition to taking part in naturalist-led hikes posted on the state park system’s Website, groups of eight or more Chief’s Challenge hikers can book a hike in advance with park naturalists at mutually convenient times.
