Chip Kelly Didn’t Push to Keep Coaching Gig: Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie
The Eagles fired head coach Chip Kelly with one game left in his third season. In his first season with the Eagles, Kelly had the fourth-ranked offense and led the team to the playoffs. Lurie said he felt the team was on the “verge of something very, very special”. The Eagles entered the season with Super Bowl expectations, still are 6-9.Lurie stated he chose to fireside Kelly before the complete of the season to get a jump begin on a coaching search & meet with players to speak to them concerning the decision.

Other possible candidates include Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who previously held the same position in Denver; Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, who was a head coach with the Oakland Raiders in 2011; and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel, who was a head coach with Denver as a 33-year-old in 2009. However, he is now still the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens and if Lurie’s hiring history has shown us anything it’s that he likes bringing in someone who has not been a head coach previously. I’m not anxious about coach Kelly at all.
Lurie says he fired Kelly based one an assessment of the last three years, not a string of recent losses. “I very much look forward to the 2016 season where we’ll have an opportunity with a new head coach, new leadership and the opportunity for the players and the organization and everybody involved to perform up to their maximum”. Kelly’s ego would seem to be the kind to declare, “I can make that guy succeed”.
“I’m the owner, the GM”, he said.
And even though Bradford still wants to return next year, he acknowledged the situation became much more unclear when the Eagles sent out their press release at 7:12 on Tuesday night.
Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will coach the team in the season finale at the New York Giants on Sunday. Chip Kelly’s not going out there putting a helmet on. I think yesterday was his first day that he really showed, I think, the best way to put it is: That looked like C.J. That was the first time yesterday when we saw him cut and look explosive. He gave Kelly full control over personnel. Luckily for Chip, he is now the hottest name on football’s coaching carousel, and could call one of these three locations home soon enough. “But all in all, I know he cared about the players, but I don’t think he had the best way to go about things”. Lurie said Kelly didn’t lose the locker room, but without criticizing Kelly he also did speak at length about finding the right leader for his team, which seemed to indicate Kelly wasn’t that leader. “I think you see signs of that”.
So where does Kelly go from here?
Whether you want to admit it or not, the Philadelphia Eagles are in a rebuild.

Howie Roseman will remain executive vice president in charge of player personnel, and be “in charge of making sure our player personnel department is as good as it gets in the National Football League”, but Lurie did not say that Roseman will have final say in player personnel.
