Jeremy Johnson came off the bench to throw for a touchdown and run for another score, leading Auburn to a 31-10 win over Memphis at the Birmingham Bowl. Auburn (7-6) prevented the 1st losing season of Gus Malzahn’s 11-year college coaching profession.

Facing one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the country, Auburn (7-6) nearly completely shut down Paxton Lynch in claiming a 31-10 win over Memphis (9-4) in the Birmingham Bowl Wednesday afternoon. He ran 17 yards on his second play from scrimmage and opened the fourth quarter with a five-yard touchdown run. A big reason for that, though, was Marcus Davis giving them a shortish field on a handful of occasions, averaging 15.5 yards on six punt returns.
Auburn running back Jovon Robinson was named the game’s MVP.
Auburn’s defense forced three-and-outs on Memphis’ next two drives and the offense capitalized, extending the lead on touchdown runs from Johnson and Robinson to put the game out of reach.
The first half looked grim for Auburn when it gave Memphis 10 points off two botched plays.
Memphis had halted a three-game losing streak after briefly climbing into the playoff conversation with a 63-0 romp over SMU in the regular-season finale when Lynch fired seven first-half touchdown passes.
Memphis finished with just 206 total yards of offense and no offensive touchdowns.
It doesn’t help Auburn that starting quarterback Sean White has been trying to overcome a knee injury since October and is questionable to play.
The Memphis offense was more interested in burning clock instead of scoring, burning some time before a three-and-out led the game to a tied halftime. Auburn bucked up deep in their own territory, though, forcing Memphis to go for a 4th and 16 in order to stay in the game. For the Memphis Tigers, it was the struggles of highly-touted junior signal-caller Paxton Lynch’s that made headlines. Memphis isnt’ a national football power and doesn’t have an overly realistic shot at a national championship, even with Lynch at the QB spot.
After Ball escaped with the football, the redshirt senior reportedly flipped his middle finger to the crowd and Auburn players as he left the field. Prescott enters this game as one of four players in FBS history to pass for 60 touchdowns and rushed for 40 TDs in his career and he will be hoping to add to that tally on Wednesday.
