Star Wars Earns $517 Million At Box Office, An All-Time Record

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has cleared the planet and will blow the box office record to smithereens – and it was men, overwhelmingly, that drove what’s expected to be a $250 million three-day haul. It topped other less interesting records which are kind of obvious (biggest PG-13 opening, highest per average theater total, etc.) but suffice to say it is now the big bad record holder to beat for nearly everything except highest total domestic gross, which raises an interesting question: does it have the staying power needed to top long term box office grand masters like Avatar, Titanic and Jurassic World? Astonishing though it is, that is just the second biggest opening weekend globally, behind Jurassic World, which took $US524.9 million on its opening weekend in June. The movie reportedly raked in more than $100 million in pre-sales before its early Thursday night opening, and when the final theatrical trailer was played during Monday night football on ESPN, it was subsequently viewed more than 128 million times over a 24-hour period.

“Force Awakens” has already smashed several film industry records and won praise from critics and moviegoers. I’ve got nothing. The force is strong with this one. Given the pent-up fan demand and the intense marketing, Disney had estimated that the movie would break the $100 million mark at the USA box office on its opening day.

The film scored the biggest December opening weekend in numerous territories, including the Netherlands, Japan, Portugal, Italy, Argentina and Brazil.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is one of those rare motion pictures that is an event as much as it is a film.
