US accuses Iran of conducting missile test near warships
USA military officials say Iran test fired missiles Saturday that passed within 1,500 meters of an American aircraft carrier passing through global shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian ships announced on maritime radio that they were planning to conduct a live fire drill only 23 minutes before it commenced.
But Saturday’s incident brought no immediate response from Iranian officials or media, while French authorities downplayed its danger.
It is unclear how many rockets were fired, the official said; however, they were fired in a direction away from the passing commercial and coalition ships.
On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. was preparing fresh sanctions against companies and individuals in Iran, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates over alleged links to the Islamic republic’s ballistic missile programme. Iran has agreed to relinquish its nuclear weapons program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions, among other things, per the negotiated deal. The Fifth Fleet is headquartered at a U.S. Naval base in Bahrain, where its ships are strategically located to also oversee the sea lanes and combat piracy operations, in addition to the anti-IS operations.
As if US and Iranian relations weren’t complicated enough, a live-fire exercise Iran conducted near American troops this week could be making matters worse.
In May of this year, U.S. Navy warships began accompanying U.S.-flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian ships seized a commercial ship flying the flag of a U.S.-protected island nation.
The spokesman for the U.S. command called Iran’s tests so near United States warships high provocative.
The Truman recently returned to the region to support coalition-led airstrikes against Daesh.
Ties between the countries have warmed in recent months with the signing of a deal over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Raines said this incident was “uncharacteristic of most interactions” between the US and Iranian navies. Iran sank a replica of a US aircraft carrier in February near the strait and it earlier tested out so-called “suicide drones” it said could crash into naval vessels.

The U.S. disagrees, saying the Treasury’s right to “blacklist Iranian entities allegedly involved in missile development” is a separate activity from the nuclear deal’s provisions.
